What is indigo dyeing?

Indigo dyeing is said to have been introduced from China in the 6th century. There is not just one type of leaf used for indigo dyeing, but a wide variety of plants and tree leaves, and materials suited to the climate and environment of each region have been selected. In Japan, indigo from the Polygonaceae family has been used.

Indigo dyeing is a natural technique that has been used since ancient times in Japan for things like clothes worn by farmers when working in the fields and hand towels. It has deodorizing, insect repellent, and antibacterial properties, and because it is a natural dye, it is gentle on bare skin.

There are various methods for indigo dyeing, but we use a traditional technique called "natural fermentation," in which indigo leaves are naturally fermented to create "sukumo," and then lye and sake are added and fermented to create a solution, which is then colored using an air mordant.
